Maggie's Center
Stedelijke context, 9000, Gent
The Maggie's Centers are a network of walk-in centers whose purpose is to help anyone affected by cancer. They are not intended as a substitute for conventional cancer therapy, but as a caring environment that can provide support, information and practical advice.
The concept for our Maggie's Center is the green lung. Based on the lungs of humans that give you fresh air and keep you alive. The green lung consists of a glass construction containing plants. Lungs are centrally located in the body, the glass structure is also central to our design. As a result, there are more lines of sight to other floors and different spaces are visually connected to each other. In this way we create an open and fresh feeling of new life throughout the design.
In our story we go further than the affected person. We take care to his / her immediate living environment. How do partners deal with the debilitating disease? How do children feel about cancer?
The entrance to the Maggie center is located on the west side of the property. Next to the entrance you can also enter the park. The park is accessible to everyone and creates a vibrant city atmosphere around the center. The installation is equipped with numerous functions for all age groups. There are large picnic tables, several water houses and seat swings. The grass surfaces and various trees provide a green oasis of tranquility in the city. In order to break through some of the park's sight lines and thus develop new place values, curtains are provided in various places that provide a playful element due to the wind.
The ground floor is a large sun-drenched living room. It is used as a place to enthuse low-threshold audiences. Patients can spend time here with their offspring. We have broken up the basement to connect functions. The large void provides a lot of natural light and thus emphasizes the transparency of the place. The library is located in the basement, healthy living is central here, these are also continued in the themes of the books that can be found there. There is also a multipurpose playroom for children, where workshops and sessions can take place on how the children can deal with the disease.
There is a bar on the ground floor, which has a double function. There is a possibility for the family to have a coffee at their leisure and have a chat. If the Center is closed, the ground floor can be used for various events that place the center in a different light.
You leave the ground floor via a down-to-earth staircase, which provides a clear boundary between the semi public function and the more intimate heart of the Maggie Center. The mezzanine floor is a salvaged space with a view of the green lung. Places are provided for yoga and light cardio exercises.
The first floor has a homely atmosphere. It is a much more intimate place and offers more tranquility. Cooking together is the main function. Via the covered terrace you can take the outside staircase to the second floor.
The vertical circulation offers a view of the city and connects two outdoor spaces. This creates one large outdoor space. In addition to the outdoor space, there is an indoor space on the second floor. Here is a meditation room. With this concept we hope to offer everyone who comes into contact with cancer a reliable environment.
